Renovation Timelines

What actually happens week by week during a renovation. Knowing the sequence helps you plan around the disruption.

Kitchen Remodel (6–10 Weeks)

1

Demolition & Rough-Out

Existing cabinets, countertops, flooring, and backsplash removed. Structural changes (wall removal, header installation) happen here. Rough plumbing and electrical relocated if needed. 3–7 days.

2

Mechanical Rough-In

New electrical circuits, plumbing lines, gas lines, and HVAC modifications installed in open walls. Inspector verifies rough-in before walls close. 3–5 days + inspection wait.

3

Drywall & Paint

Walls patched or replaced, taped, mudded, sanded, and painted. Ceiling work completed. The kitchen starts looking like a room again. 5–7 days.

4

Cabinets & Flooring

Cabinets installed and leveled. Flooring installed (tile goes before cabinets; hardwood/LVP can go either way). 3–7 days.

5

Countertops

Stone fabricator templates after cabinets are in. Fabrication takes 7–14 days. Then installation. 10–18 days including fab time.

6

Backsplash, Fixtures & Finish

Backsplash tile installed and grouted. Plumbing fixtures, lighting, outlets, and hardware installed. Appliances delivered and connected. Touch-up paint. 4–7 days.

Bathroom Renovation (3–8 Weeks)

1

Demolition

Existing tile, vanity, toilet, and fixtures removed. Subfloor inspected for water damage — common discovery that adds 1–3 days. 1–3 days.

2

Plumbing & Electrical

Shower valve relocated if needed, drain positions adjusted, electrical for lighting, fan, and outlets. Inspection required. 2–4 days + inspection.

3

Waterproofing & Tile

Cement board, waterproof membrane (Kerdi, RedGard), then tile installation. Shower tile is the most time-intensive phase. 5–10 days.

4

Vanity, Fixtures & Finish

Vanity and countertop installed, toilet set, shower glass measured and installed, mirrors, lighting, hardware. Final caulking and grout sealing. 3–5 days.

Whole-Home Renovation (4–8 Months)

1

Planning & Permits

Design finalization, material selections, engineering, and permit applications. This phase is often underestimated. 4–8 weeks.

2

Demolition & Structural

All demolition, wall removal, structural modifications, and foundation work. The house will look worse before it looks better. 2–4 weeks.

3

Mechanical Systems

Complete electrical, plumbing, and HVAC rough-in throughout the house. Multiple inspections required. 2–4 weeks.

4

Insulation, Drywall & Paint

Insulation installed, drywall hung and finished, all surfaces painted. 2–4 weeks.

5

Kitchens & Bathrooms

Cabinets, countertops, tile, fixtures in all kitchens and bathrooms. This is the longest finish phase. 4–6 weeks.

6

Flooring, Trim & Final

Flooring throughout, baseboards, door hardware, final fixtures, appliance hookup, final inspections, and punch list walk-through. 2–4 weeks.

Add 1–4 weeks for permitting lead time depending on jurisdiction. Florida coastal counties and Atlanta’s historic districts tend toward the longer end. Check our city pages for local permitting details.
